Accessibility

This statement is designed to give a description of the access to areas inside and outside of The St Leonards that can be accessed by our guests.

The property was built as a private house in 1870 and converted into a Guest House in 1930s. The accommodation is set over three floors. The entrance lobby, lounge bar and breakfast room are on the ground floor. Guest rooms 1, 2 and 3 are on the first floor and guest rooms 4, 5, 6, and 7 are on the second floor. There are 2 flights of 7 steps with intermediate landings between each floor. There are no guest rooms on the ground floor. There are 3″ high raised thresholds on all main entry/exit doors.

Pre-arrival

The main train station connects to the Wightlink passenger ferry terminal. Ryde is 5 minutes away by car or 10 to 15 minutes by foot. There are several local taxi companies that serve the station and other areas.

Arrival & car parking facilities

Off road parking is available at the front of the building. The surface is block paved and slopes up to the front entrance. Public street parking is also available. The area is illuminated by adjacent street lighting and outside lighting attached to the building.

Main entrance and reception

The front porch entrance is accessed by two steps of 20cm high leading up to the front door. Wheelchair access is not possible due to the steps and the narrow door width. We can assist guests with their luggage if required. The front door is always locked; access is gained using a key attached to the room key fob. There is a bell press on the door frame. The entrance leads to the entrance lobby. Seating is provided in the entrance lobby.

Our breakfast room and lounge bar are on the ground floor. There is no public WC available.

Getting to the Isle of Wight is a seamless and enjoyable experience, thanks to the various travel options available.

The ports of Southampton, Portsmouth, and Lymington offer regular ferry connections, allowing you to bring your car or travel as a foot passenger. These ferry crossings provide stunning views of the Solent and take approximately 20-40 minutes, depending on the route and operator.

Alternatively, for a more unique experience, you can take a hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde, offering a thrilling ride across the water in just 10 minutes. This is also the home of the iconic train that travels from Ryde to Shanklin, combining nostalgia, scenic views, and a unique way to explore the island.

If you prefer to fly, Southampton Airport provides domestic and international flights, with connections to major cities in the UK and Europe.

Once on the island, an efficient public transport system, including buses, train and taxi services make it easy to explore the Isle of Wight and reach your desired destination. Car rentals and bicycle hire are also within walking distance from The St Leonards guest house.
